Description

Beer Magic was founded in 2010 by Günther Thömmes as "Bierzauberer GmbH" in Brunn am Gebirge. Thömmes, who wrote numerous professional articles on the subject of beer and brewing history, became known in particular through his novel "Der Bierzauberer", which he followed with other beer-related historical novels. Born in Germany, Brauer, who completed his apprenticeship as a brewer and maltster in the Bitburger brewery and completed his studies as Diplom-Braumeister in Weihenstephan in 1991, acquired the trade license for a microbrewery in January 2010 and subsequently opened the Leopold-Gattringer Street 39 in Brunn am Gebirge a microbrewery. As a neighbor of the beer shop Thömmes brewed in the episode mostly top-fermented beers, especially British beer styles, but also produced the first Gose of Austria. Already after three years, the beer magic reached its capacity limits and Thömmes moved with his brewery in the summer of 2013 in a hall in the industrial area of Brunn (Industriestraße A 6). There, however, the brewery never really got going and Thömmes had to give up the brewing business due to unsolvable technical difficulties as well as problems with the financing of the newly planned, larger brewhouse. In September 2013, Thömmes announced the end of the physical beer magic in an open letter with the end of 2013. At the same time he announced his decision to work in the future as a Wanderbrauer. He sold the brewing equipment to the founders of the Xaver brewery. As a migrant brewer, Thömmes brewed his beers in the brewery Gusswerk, in the Gablitzer private brewery, in the brewery Schrems as well as in Budapest, Porto Allegre (Brazil), Bamberg and Schlüsselfeld. In addition, the beer magician has been developing over 40 different recipes since 2010. In 2011, Conrad Seidl's beer guide awarded Bierzauberei the title of "Microbrewery of the Year", his "Speculoos beer" and his "Aleysium No. 5 - Milde Gose "was also ranked among the beers of the year in 2012 and 2015 by the beer guide. At the end of January 2016, Thömmes announced on his blog that he was going to end the beer magic project. As a reason Thömmes said that he had not succeeded in six years to achieve an economically meaningful operation with beer magic. One of the main reasons for Thömmes was the problematic self-distribution, which forced him to transport his beer even to Hamburg. Therefore, the beer magician decided despite black figures to stop brewing. Thömmes plans to look for a buyer for the brewing project.
