The breweries of the Hanseatic League
The 13th century was the first great beer era in the German lands. Countless breweries were established in the cities of the Hanseatic League. Although Hamburg was considered the most important brewery of the Hanseatic League, Stralsund also benefited from the great boom. There were over 220 so-called brewing rights in the city, meaning that over 220 houses had permission to brew beer. The export of Stralsund beer flourished, especially to Denmark and Norway.
Bloodthirsty namesake
Today, Störtebeker Braumanufaktur carries the good reputation of Stralsund beers out into the world. The brewery emerged from the Stralsund club brewery. Since the reorganization of the brewery in 2010, the brewery has been named after a pirate.
Klaus Störtebeker was up to mischief on the seas of the north at the end of the 14th century. The pirate captured countless ships of the Hanseatic League, terrifying people until he was finally executed in Hamburg.
How fortunate that Störtebeker only captures our palates today. With fantastic beers.
Störtebeker Schwarz-Bier
Two beers from the Stralsund brewery's range were awarded gold at this year's European Beer Star. The rye wheat received the gold award in the “Beer with alternative grains” category and the black beer in the “German-style black beer” category.
Roasted, caramel and pilsner malts give the matt black Schwarzbier its roasted taste and the aroma of coffee and dark chocolate.
