Day 10 ::: Smoky Märzen by Hösl

On 1 February 1906 Michael Hösl sen. owned the Gambrinus brewery in Mitterteich (Oberpfalz, Bavaria), which was originally founded in 1870. Due to name disputes with the Gambrinus Brewery in Weiden, the brewery was renamed in 1930 in Hösl-Bräu. In 1947 son Hans Hösl took over the business. On January 1, 1985, his sons Michael and Maximilian Hösl take over the brewery, now Höslbräu OHG (general partnership). Following the bankruptcy of the OHG in 1993, Michael Hösl now continues to run the third-generation business as Private Brewery Hösl.
During the more than one hundred year history of the private brewery Hösl, several conversions, extensions and new buildings were realized. For example, in 1967, a 100 meter deep well was drilled for brewing water supply.

Today's smoke beer has a long tradition in the "Old World":
In fact, many beers in history used to be smoked beers. The reason is the malting: The malt must be dried for beer production. In addition to the sun-drying, which was not possible climatically in all regions, an open wood fire was used to support the dryer. Heat and smoke flowed through the green malt on the kiln, depriving it of moisture and preserving it at the same time. During industrialization, new techniques have been developed that allow the use of special fossil fuel heaters, such as: As coal and oil allowed. As these methods were cheaper and easier to handle, they gradually replaced the old smoke dryer.

How was your experience?

I really am a zmarzen fan. This ranks high on my list. Great color, love the saltiness for flavor. Might be my favorite so far in advent calendar beers.

Sizable froth, dark brassy hue with a perfect clarity. Smells of toasted bread crust and crackers, very malty and clean. Touch of malty sweetness to start, quick layers of toasted grain and bread open up on the palate. Smooth and crisp with a medium sized body. Semi-dry finish. A solid malt forward lager, true to style and very clean.

Stunning, deep reddish amber color that matches its bite. Has a lot of character. Wasn't a fan of the finish at first, but did get a lot better with each sip. I can see this one being a beer fan favorite.

Nice rich flavor and aroma. I agree, its a good change up from the last few days. Tastes similar to an Alt that a local brewery puts out here in Nebraska. Really enjoying this one! Cheers!

Meh... it's like a German pretzel that didnt quite finish baking. Pleasant on the nose but the after taste was a bit of a challenge. Drink ability rating moderate to low. Not a fav but not going to waste either.

Best of the box to date! The smoke flavor is very subtle. I've had other smoked beers, including marzens, but always found the smoke flavor to be much too overbearing. This one is the only one I've had that got it just right. My favorite style....it has the color and malt flavor that I've come to love from a good marzen. I want more!!!!!!!

A lovely amber color with a light smoke aroma and flavor. I think it is the best beer of those tasted so far.

Light smoke but not dominating. The maltiness is superb and there’s a touch of hop in the finish. Very good!

Delicious beer. I like Scotch, but I don’t like beer to taste that peaty and smoky. Today’s beer strikes a good balance.
