Beer Advent Day 23: Alpirsbacher Pils

Alpirsbach, the village, originated as a settlement near the monastery called Alpirsbach in the 12th century. Count Wilhelm II is said to have founded a brewery in the monastery at that time. Alpirsbach can therefore look back on 900 years of brewing tradition. Today's brewery was of course built much later, although it is based on the roots of the old brewery. The brewery has been in the hands of the Glauner family since 1877. It has borne the name Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu since 1906, in keeping with its origins.

Black Forest beer diversity

The Black Forest brewery's range is diverse, and the Alpirsbachers divide it into groups: The classics, the wheat beers, the specials and the monastery specialties.

Our beer today, Pilsner, is of course one of the classic beers. The beer has already won a European Beer Star Award in gold twice. So we can look forward to the sunny yellow Alpirsbacher Pils. Pouring it into our glass, we perceive fruity, fresh hop aromas reminiscent of citrus fruits and melon. The body is elegant and lean, the hop bitterness concise and delicately bitter, the finish dry and animating.

Monastery whiskey

Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu has also been producing whiskey since 2016. On the face of it, this is not far-fetched. After all, the starch from the malt has to be converted into sugar for both products. For this purpose, the extract-rich “wort” is produced in the brewhouse, which is also found in pure whiskey distilleries. Alpirsbacher Kloster Whiskey is matured in oak barrels, as it should be, and can call itself a single malt.
