Description

Het Anker is a Flemish brewery in the Belgian city of Mechelen in the province of Antwerp. In 2014, 28,000 hl of beer were produced. Half of it was exported. The brewery has 53 employees. The brewery was originally founded in 1471 by members of the Christian Beguinage and Begarden community. In 1872 the Mechelen brewery was acquired by Louis Van Breedam, who renamed it and gave it the current name Het Anker. In 1904, Het Anker expanded its range to include lager and ale. After the Second World War, a so-called Keizer (Kaiser beer) was produced. Het Anker also opened a brasserie and managed a hotel. The company has been producing the Gouden Carolus (Golden Karl) brands, named after the Roman-German Emperor Karl V, maneblusser and other types of beer since 1960. An ale is brewed under the Lucifer brand, and the wheat beer Dentergems Wit, for which the rights to the varieties were acquired from Duvel Moortgat, the owner of the bankrupt Belgian brewer Liefmans, in which the beer was originally produced. [4] A fruit beer is also offered with Boscoli. In 2010, they also began producing a single malt whiskey, which is marketed under the name Gouden Carolus Single Malt. The Lucifer beer brand took sixth place in a 2010 New York Times test. [5] [6] In 2015, Goulden Carlos Classic was named the best Belgian beer in the Belgian Style Strong category. [7] The company is family-run in the fifth generation and is a member of Belgian Family Brewers.
