Beer Advent Day 11: Kauzen Bräu

The Ochsenfurt Kauz

The small town of Ochsenfurt am Main in Lower Franconia has had a brewery since 1809. It was not until 1974 that the monastery brewery was renamed “Kauzen Bräu”. The name has a historical connection. In the old days, a large silver goblet in the shape of an owl was served to the town's guests. Anyone who could empty the “Ochsenfurter Kauz” in one go was allowed to make an honorable entry in the town's “Kauzenbuch”.

In 1958, Kauzen Bräu expanded its range with the “Kauzen Bock” and, by its own admission, made a link to the old custom. It is not known whether the people of Ochsenfurt drank the bock beers in one gulp as in the old days. However, we do know that the small container, i.e. the small bottle, was introduced soon afterwards as the “Käuzle”.

Käuzle Helles Lager

Today's beer is the little brother of Kauzen Hell. Käuzle Helles Lager is bottled in a small bottle and has slightly less alcohol: 4.9 % instead of 5.1 %. Don't forget: Well chilled and drunk in small sips from the BeerTasting glass, the enjoyment of Hellem is at its greatest.

Cheers!
