Belgian Breweries Unite as Brewery Huyghe Acquires Het Anker

Brewery Huyghe, the esteemed producer of Delirium Tremens, has officially acquired Het Anker, a historic Mechelen brewery celebrated for its Gouden Carolus and Maneblusser beers. This strategic move brings together two family-run breweries with centuries-old legacies, aiming to enhance their competitive edge locally and globally.

Huyghe: A Sustainability Pioneer with a Global Reach
Brewery Huyghe, which brewed 250,000 hectoliters in 2023, has a solid international reputation, exporting 83% of its beers to over 100 countries. Its robust portfolio includes 14 brands spanning 41 beer styles, with a turnover of EUR 45 million (USD 48 million) in 2023. A leader in green brewing, Huyghe has pledged EUR 35 million since 2012 to become fully CO₂ neutral by 2035.

Het Anker: A Heritage Brewery with Diverse Offerings
Het Anker, with roots tracing back to the 15th century, remains a cherished Belgian brewery producing 30,000 hectoliters annually. Its 2023 turnover of EUR 20 million (USD 21.3 million) reflects its diverse offerings, which include premium beers, Belgian whiskies, and niche products under the Batteliek brand. With its brewery tours, hotel, and cultural events, Het Anker is also a tourism destination celebrating Belgian beer heritage.

Combining Strengths to Foster Growth
The acquisition allows Het Anker to tap into Huyghe’s extensive export network, bringing Gouden Carolus and other products to a global audience. Simultaneously, Huyghe plans to infuse its innovative sustainability practices into Het Anker’s operations, ensuring both breweries evolve sustainably. "This partnership is a perfect match," said Alain De Laet, owner and managing director of Brewery Huyghe. "Together, we can preserve our rich traditions while growing responsibly."

Looking Forward to a Sustainable Future
For Het Anker, the deal marks the end of an eight-year collaboration with BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity, which helped drive its expansion. Charles Leclef, Het Anker’s owner and managing director, expressed confidence in the union: "Brewery Huyghe’s respect for our heritage and vision for the future assures me that our family’s legacy is in good hands."

A Growing Trend in Belgian Brewing
This acquisition highlights the increasing trend of consolidation in Belgium’s brewing industry as family-owned businesses join forces to remain competitive in an evolving market. The alliance sets the stage for greater innovation and growth, preserving the unique charm of Belgian beer for generations to come.
