Beer Advent Day 21: Schneider Weisse

Beer Advent Day 21: Schneider Weisse

In 1872, after tough negotiations with the Bavarian Hofbräuamt, Munich entrepreneur Georg I. Schneider becomes the first commoner to be granted the right to brew wheat beer. He buys the building of the disused brewery “Zum Maderbräu” in Munich in the valley and founds the “Schneider Weisse” brewery with his son Georg II. In 1924, the Weiße Brauhaus in Kelheim is taken over. After the Munich brewery in the valley was destroyed in the Second World War, Georg IV Schneider decided to make a new start in Kehlheim. His grandson Georg VI Schneider has been in charge of the brewery since 2000. He is a visionary and expands the range of wheat beers bit by bit.

Eleven wheat beers in all

The very first Schneider wheat beer becomes a true classic and is still brewed according to the recipe from 1872 as “Original TAP7”. So today we can enjoy the “perennial favorite” from the Kelheim brewing kettles.

A look at the range reveals just how versatile Schneider Weisse is when it comes to playing the keyboard of wheat and barley malt, hops and yeast.  We count eleven different wheat beers. Non-alcoholic Weisse, the light and pale Weisse, Kristallweizen, the strong Festweisse, Aventinus, the dark Weizendoppelbock and its stronger counterpart, Aventinus Eisbock. In addition, the Hopfenweisse, which was created as a “Collaboration Brew” between Schneider Weisse and the “Brooklyn Brewery” in New York. It was the first wheat beer in Germany to be brewed with lots of hops. It was probably the first wheat IPA in the world. Since 2022, Lovebeer's new-style interpretation of wheat beer has complemented the long line of Schneider Weisse beers.
