Beer description

Hops: Columbus, Triumph, Comet. Yeast: Tropicale. Coming to power was probably the easiest part of Queen Mary of Hungary’s reign from 1382 to 1395. Staying in power was the hard part. Mary became Queen regnant, when Hungary simply ran out of male heirs to the throne after the death of her father Louis the Great. Having a female monarch in the form of an 11-year-old girl was not exactly popular amongst the Hungarian nobility. And many of them murmured that the young Queen was nothing but a mere puppet for her mother, Elizabeth of Bosnia’s, political ambitions. But through political cunning, paired with the odd assassination of political opponents, Mary – and her mother – managed to stay in power for thirteen years – even when Mary’s fiancé, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and her distant cousin, Charles III of Naples, tried to boot her from the throne, putting action behind their words by invading Mary’s kingdom from different directions. Even when Sigismund – now Mary’s husband – eventually managed to take over the Hungarian throne, Mary remained an official co-ruler until the end of her life. Ironically, her death came not as a result of political strife, but as a result of a hunting accident where her horse tripped, killing the young Queen Mary and her unborn child. This beer is a collaboration made with FIRST Craft Beer from Budapest, Hungary.
