Beer Advent Day 12: Hösl Edel Pilsner

The family-run Hösl brewery brews its excellent beers in the middle of the Stiftland region in the Upper Palatinate, in the municipality of Mitterteich.

Zoigl - German cultural heritage

Mitterteich is one of five municipalities in the Upper Palatinate where the centuries-old Zoigl culture is cultivated. Since 2018, “Zoigl” has been a recognized intangible cultural heritage of Germany.

The roots of Zoigl beer go back to the year 1415. At that time, all landlords in the Upper Palatinate were granted brewing and serving rights. In the municipalities of Eslarn, Falkenberg, Neuhaus, Windischeschbach and Mitterteich, there are still communal breweries today in which those families who own brewing rights produce Zoigl beer together. The breweries are museum pieces with wood-fired vats and open cooling vessels. The bottom-fermented beer can even be served in their own homes.

Hösl Bräu

The Hösl family has been running the brewery in Mitterteich since 1906, when their grandparents Margarete and Michael bought the former Gambrinus brewery. The Hösls are Upper Palatinate through and through, firmly rooted in the region. They see themselves not only as beer producers, but also as neighbors and hosts, cultivating customer and business relationships as well as genuine friendships.

The range

We are aware of tradition. So it's no wonder that the range also includes unfiltered Zoigl beers: “Mein Zoigl” and “Communbräu Winterzoigl”. There are also Helles, a “Karpfentrunk” (bottom-fermented and strong), “Süffikus” is a bock beer, light, light and dark wheat beer and more. “Wh1sk3y Weisse” is perhaps the most eye-catching product. It was produced with peaty whiskey malt in honor of the 20-year community partnership between Mitterteich and the English town of Cheddleton Wetley-Rocks / Stafford-Shire.
