Despite the economic crisis felt around the world, global beer output grew by 1.3 percent to 1.89 billion hectoliters. The level of the last pre-pandemic year 2019 was not reached again. At that time, output was 1.91 billion hectoliters. That's according to the 2022/2023 BarthHaas report released yesterday (07/25/2013).
Americas slightly positive on balance
There was a slight upward trend on the American continent, with +1.0% to 622 million hectoliters; however, developments in the various countries varied greatly in 2022: There was strong growth in South America (+5.3%), and the country with the most significant increase was Brazil (+4.4 million hl). In North America, Mexico (+6.3 million hl) was unable to offset the strong decline in the USA (-10.1 million hl). In total, there was a loss of 1.2 percent.
German brewers back on growth track
Germany outperformed the international average: after a difficult previous year, many German breweries made strong gains again in 2022; overall output rose by 2.8 percent to 87.8 million hectoliters. "In the global ranking, Germany thus continues to position itself in 5th place," explains Heinrich Meier, author of the BarthHaas report. "Places 1 to 4 are held unchallenged by China, the USA, Brazil and Mexico. These top five producing countries brew nearly half (49 percent) of the beer."
China dominates in Asia
In Asia, China accounts for by far the highest beer output, with 62 percent. As in the previous year, around 360 million hectoliters were produced there. It was followed by India, Thailand and South Korea.
