South Africa imposes fourth ban on alcohol sales

The Delta variant has reached in South Africa. A few days ago, the total number of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases narrowed the 2 million mark with more than 13,000 officially reported new cases every day which has led President Cyril Ramaphosa to increase the measures in the fight against COVID-19 again with South Africa's forth alcohol ban.

The last alcohol ban was imposed in December after a surge in COVID-19 infections had pushed South Africa’s total confirmed virus cases past 1 million.

Next to ban of buying and consuming alcohol he also set a nightly curfew from 21.00 - 04.00 / 9 p.m. - 4 a.m. Furthermore, he ordered to close bars, restaurants, taverns, etc. Permission to stay open is granted to schools, gyms, casinos, fitness centers, theatres and cinemas, etc. The president also announced the prohibition of all gatherings except at funerals, the workplace or when buying goods or services, and restrictions on leisure travels to and from Gauteng.

The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) is seeking legal advice on these new government measures. BASA argues that not alcohol is the reason for increasing numbers, but the people themselves by attending large gatherings and the failure to wear a mask for example. “The previous three alcohol bans have devastated thousands of small businesses,” the association said.
"The prohibition of alcohol will not stop South Africans drinking. Instead, consumers will purchase their alcohol from illegal outlets, putting their health and safety at risk” which will only make numbers increase even more.

I guess it’s good to be an American (unless you live in a dry county—but at least you don’t have to go to another country to get a beer).
