Brewer's Advent Day #19: Zwönitzer Rauchbier

Since 1997, the small brewpub Zwönitz has existed in the tranquil little town in the middle of the Ore Mountains in eastern Germany, called Zwönitz. Dominik Naumann is both owner and brewmaster. He took over the family business from his father in 2011. Dominik combines traditional brewing skills with the joy of experimentation of a craft brewer. He is particularly passionate about the beer style RAUCHBIER, which has almost fallen into oblivion. He knows not everyone likes the smoky flavors that are so reminiscent of smoked ham. Anyone who has ever combined a smoke beer with BBQ will never forget this beer & food pairing.

Zwönitz Rauchbier: Chestnut brown color with creamy, dense foam. Smoke aromas are accompanied by caramel notes. The taste is also slightly smoky. The bitterness is subtle and has a very balancing effect. With this beer, either you love it or you don't.

Love this beer, the smoky notes and deep colour are awesome. Wish I had the smoked brisket to go with it.

I have liked all of the beers I have tasted in this advent calendar, but I believe this has been the most unique and by that virtue the best thus far. Wow! So good and I regret I was not feasting on barbecued meat as I drank. I am not sure a steady diet of this beer would last, but I can certainly see this as a regular - loved the Smokey taste!

I was prepared to really dislike this as I generally do not like dark beers. I was wrong. This was delightful. The smokiness was really unique. Nice addition to calendar. Cheers! 🍻 🍺🎁🎁✨🗽🇺🇸

Surprisingly pleasant. Smokey flavor doesn't overpower but has nice contrast to coffee chocalate under tones. My wife and I both like this beer and would drink another if offered.

Wasnt expecting this flavor. Most of the beer has been somewhat similar in taste. Very good smoky flavor with hints of coffee and chocolate. Wonderful amber color and thick foam. One of my top 2 beers so far!

OH! MY! These are the kinds of beers I get excited about! When brewer is will to go against popular opinion, and give us something unique and adventurous! This is my favorite out of the Brewers Advent Calendar 2021 thus far! Smokey. Sweet. Bold yet balanced. Notes of coffee and chocolate. I think if found this years winner… at least as far as I’m concerned!

Can’t drink that. The smoke overwhelms everything else in a way I can’t ignore.

Not a strong smell, rather subtle, but can detect the smoke. Beautiful head and beer color. I thought it would be a bit sweeter than it was, but it definitely was not bitter. Seemed to have lower carbonation. I agree that it became tastier when it was warmer. Tasting the foam by itself was a nice treat. The show was extremely interesting historically. I loved that the brewer’s son came along!
