A Viennese family emigrates to Canada. The grandson opens a brewery, becomes successful, thinks of his relatives in Austria and conquers the European market with his cousin.
Steamworks - the steam brewery
When Eli Gershkovitch took ownership of the historic “Gastown Brewpub” in Vancouver in 1995, he discovered a rare steam heating system in the building. The master brewer had read about steam brewing, but had never seen a brewery that produced beer in this way. Full of enthusiasm, he experimented and developed his own brewing system. It is Canada's first steam brewery - perhaps even the only one. Eli didn't have to think long about what to call the brewery: Steamworks.
From Canada to Europe
Eli kept returning to Europe in search of recipes and inspiration. He met up with his cousin in Austria. The contact deepened in 2014 and the two decided to bring the Canadian beer specialties to Europe together over a glass of Steamworks beer.
Today, Steamworks brews the European beers in Berlin. This protects the environment and is good for the quality of the beers, because the fresher the better, especially when it comes to hoppy beers! And our beer today is hoppy through and through. As befits an India Pale Lager.
India Pale Lager
Don't confuse it with India Pale Ale. The beer styles are “distantly related” but still different. Do you know the difference?
That's right. IPA is top-fermented, an ale. IPL, i.e. India Pale Lager, is a lager and therefore bottom-fermented. Both IPA and IPL are characterized by their aroma and bitterness. Fruity, often exotic aromas beguile the nose. On the palate, the bitterness comes to the fore.
Cheers!
