Beer Advent Day 20: Woidlerei Falter Dunkel

“Woidlerei”. The term has historical roots and refers to an old tradition that used to be cultivated in the Bavarian Forest and led to a lively exchange of beer.

The “Woidler” and their beer

We are talking about the times when breweries still sold their beers “around their own chimney”. People drank what was brewed in the village - and were curious about other brews. When the “Woidler”, the people from the Bavarian Forest, traveled, even if it was only to one of the neighboring communities, they took a beer from the village with them and exchanged it for a beer from there. In this way, they got to know the variety of beers in the region and enjoyed their visits.

The master brewers also practiced this custom, which was called “Woidlerei”. It offered the opportunity to exchange ideas with competitors about the different types of beer, recipes and the finer points of brewing. With the advent of beverage markets, the “Woidlerei” became obsolete.

The “Woidlerei” is back

With the founding of the “Woidlerei” brand, the custom was modernized and revived - as a joint project of the breweries in the Bavarian Forest and to strengthen the diversity of beer there. Each beer has its own label with a tree motif representing the forests of the region.

There are currently two Woidlerei beers. One comes from the private brewery Ettl (a Helles), the second was contributed to the brand by the private brewery J.B. Falter. It is our beer from today's Advent calendar, a dark lager.

Other breweries are already working on beers that will expand the Woidlerei range.
