Description
It all started with 5 breweries in South India. The oldest of these, Castle Breweries, dates back to 1857. The United Breweries, as these breweries were named in 1915, have come a long way. Soon after, the sight of oxcarts with huge barrels or "hog's heads" containing beer became a house view. These cars made their way to customers, including British troops in and around Madras, Bangalore and the Nilgiris. Almost immediately, UB's brew became especially popular with British troops. This is how the history of beer in India and the history of the United Breweries began! The company was bought in 1947 by the late Mr. Vittal Mallya and has since been successful again and never looked back. Today, each of the 89,763 stores selling beer in India sells at least one brand of United Breweries.
