Description
Beer has been brewed in the property at Hauptstr. 116 in Erlangen since before the 30 Years War. In 1653 Erlangen gets its first post office, a Reichsposthalterei, which is housed in this house, adjacent to the medieval city wall.
The courtyard buildings house the stables and feed storage for the carriage horses. The beer is produced for the hospitality of the postal travelers.
The rock cellars on the Burgberg, about 500 meters away, some of which were built before the 30-year war, enable the brewers of the Reichsposthalterei to store large quantities of beer in a cool place. Later they could also cool the beer with ice from the Ludwig - Main - Danube - Canal.
Not least for these reasons, Erlangen was leading in beer exports ahead of Kulmbach, Nuremberg and Munich in 1861, when Carl Steinbach acquired the brewery.
After Carl Steinbach's death, his sons Karl and Fritz Steinbach continued to run the brewery.
After training as a brewer in Freiburg, Berlin and Dortmund and studying in Weihenstephan, Dipl. Braumeister Christoph Gewalt has been continuing the old brewing tradition since May 1995 when he started up the pub brewery. The brewery's own malt offers the best possible conditions for brewing a good beer. The use of numerous special malts makes it possible to brew various beer specialties. According to old recipes and old customs with the best technology available today, an unfiltered beer is offered.
At Whitsun 1997, Steinbach Bräu will be back at the Steinbachkeller am Berg with its original Steinbach Bergkirchweih beer for the first time since 1923.
