Description

In 1277, the brewery of the later Richmodi Kölsch was first mentioned. In 1930, Brauer Friedrich Winter bought the "Obergärige Bierbrauerei Franz Dünnwald, Richmodis-Bräu" on a forced sale. Later there were several changes of ownership before Gaffel took over the brewery in Porz in Welserstraße in 1998. After being relatively quiet about the beer around 2002, the REWE Group introduced it exlusively in its range in 2012. The name Richmodis comes from an old Cologne legend: In the 14th century lived in Cologne Neumarkt the Noble Mengis of Aducht with his wife Richmodis. When the plague came to Cologne and swept away thousands, the young beautiful Richmodis of Adocht also died after only three days in bed. They were taken to the neighboring cemetery of St. Aposteln. Since the council was afraid of further infection, the deceased was buried immediately during the night without wake and soul ministry. The gravedigger, however, had noticed that the dead woman still had two valuable rings on his finger and a valuable chain around his neck. That's why he tried to rob Richmy's grave in the tomb during the night. Both secretly sneaked into the cemetery of St. Apostles under the cover of darkness and opened the coffin. Trying to turn the ring from the finger of the dead man, the deadly note awoke, gave a deep sigh, and straightened up. The two brazen thieves were so startled that they went head over heels from the graveyard. When the revived Richmodis recognized the seriousness of her situation, she ran home from the graveyard with a waving shirt of death. There she knocked on the locked gate and asked for admission. As the hurrying servant believed that the spirit of his deceased mistress was standing at the door, he ran into the house and awoke his master. But this one, who had seen his dead wife in the coffin wanted - just like his servant - not believe what his wife called out there at the door: she was not dead, but buried alive. When the horses in the stable began to whinny aloud, the unbelieving husband said: "Rather, my two steeds are coming up the stairs than there is my still-living wife outside the door." But no sooner had he said that than the two white horses were already clattering up the stairs, invading his room and holding their heads out to the window whinnying. Now Mengis also looked out of Aducht into the street and saw his pale wife standing in front of the door weeping in the moonlight. Then the fear dissolved and he overcame sudden joy. He lunged into the street and hugged his beloved Richmodis. All this happened according to legend in 1357. The couple lived together for many years and had a bevy of children.
