Description
The brewery was founded in 1835 by Jakob Zorn (1812-1882) in his wine tavern in Eppingen, Baden. Under his son Franz Zorn (1839-1917), the business expanded. It was Franz Zorn who brought palm trees from Italy, decorated the inn with them and renamed it Gasthaus zur Palme, from which the name Palmbräu was derived.
In 2002, Palmbräu had to file for insolvency, but the brewery was able to remain as an independent brand through a subsequent cooperation with Weldebräu from Plankstadt, which acquired a majority stake in Palmbräu. Distribution was outsourced to a new company, Palmbräu Eppingen GmbH, owned by Weldebräu, in the summer of 2008. Production and logistics remained with Zorn Söhne GmbH & Co. KG.
At the beginning of April 2009, Brauhaus Pforzheim took over the land, real estate, inventory, empties and stocks of the insolvent brewery from Wolfgang Scheidtweiler, as well as the rights to the Palmbräu brand, and continued brewing operations in Eppingen.
