Description
The Cervecería Modelo, founded in 1922, went into production on October 25, 1925. Right from the start she succeeded in gaining market share from the traditional brewery Toluca y México, which is based in the neighboring state of México, until in 1935 she finally took over the brewery, which had been founded in 1865. Important expansions were achieved in 1954 with the takeover of the traditional breweries Pacífico in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and La Estrella in Guadalajara, Jalisco. As a result, Grupo Modelo became the largest brewery group in Mexico and has remained so to this day. In the 1960s, new breweries were set up, such as the Cervecería Modelo del Noroeste (1961) in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, the Cervecería Modelo de Guadalajara (1964) in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and the Cervecería Modelo de Torreón (1967) in Torreón, Coahuila . In 1979 the Cervecería Yucateca in Mérida, Yucatán, was taken over (closed in 2002) and the construction of the Compañía Cervecera del Trópico in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, began, whose production started in 1984. In 1991, the Compañía Cervecera de Zacatecas was established in Calera de Víctor Rosales, Zacatecas, which has been brewing since 1997. In 2007, construction of the Compañía Cervecera de Coahuila began near Piedras Negras. Beer has been brewed there since March 2010. The brewery is now owned by Constellation Brands
