Description
The Thirty Years' War led many families to leave their old home in Switzerland and settle elsewhere. Quite a few families settled in the Odenwälder area, including Ulrich Schönberger and his family. In Upper Mossau he brewed his own beer from the end of the 18th century and thus supplied his inn "Zum Hirschen". In 1834, his grandson Ludwig Schönberger married to Groß-Bieberau, and insisted on brewing beer as well. In 1835 he opened a brewery and a restaurant. As is known today to only a few people in Groß-Bieberau, the brewery was at that time on the grounds on the corner of Marktstraße and Jahnstraße. Only later did you move to the opposite side, to where the brewery still stands today. Incidentally, the brewery grounds are located on the remains of Roman manors, which are still from the time of Roman settlement. The brewery was run by both sons, Georg and Ludwig-Martin under the name: "Brewery Ludwig Schönberger and sons". But after a few years, they decided to split the ownership. Georg kept the brewery, Ludwig-Martin took over the inn "Zum Odenwald".
