Description

The brewery Jos. Baumgartner is an Austrian brewery owned by the "Gemeinnützige Baumgartner-Spanlang-Stiftung", headquartered in Schärding am Inn. There were always several breweries in Schärding. The parent company Baumgartner within the former city walls was first mentioned in 1609. Since then, the company has been in family ownership in changing legal form. The aforementioned parent company in Denisgasse also housed the company's headquarters until 2011. The Baumgartner-Bräustüberl "Gasthof Zur Bums'n" is still there today. In 1938, the Niklas brewery was acquired at Niederwesen Castle in Wesenufer on the Danube. Marie Baumgartner finally married Othmar Spanlang, who eventually rose to the position of chief executive officer and unexpectedly died in 1950 at the age of only 49. After his death, his widow took over the management. From 1950 to 1954, the brewery was rebuilt on the outskirts of the town of Schärding, directly opposite the brewery of Kapsreiter brewery. In 1973, a large depot was set up in Linz in order to better supply Upper Austria's central area. After the demise of the company boss Marie Spanlang (née Baumgartner) in 1989, the company was converted with brewery and quarries into a public limited company, in which the newly established "Gemeinnützige Baumgartner-Spanlang-Stiftung" holds the majority. According to the legacy of founder Marie Spanlang, this foundation supports non-profit institutions for disabled children and elderly people. In 2002, a new logistics warehouse for the brewery was opened in St. Florian am Inn. In the spring of 2011, a new administration building was opened, and the company headquarters moved from the Denisgasse location to the location of the new administration building at Franz-Xaver-Brunner-Straße 1. At the same time the brewery Baumgartner was converted from an AG into a GmbH. Similar to the Kapsreiter Group, which is also based in Schärding, Baumgartner not only operated the brewery but also its own granite industry with quarries and gravel works in St. Florian am Inn, Schrems and Blauberg. The still existing Baumgartner quarries were incorporated into the "Baumgartner-Spanlang-Stiftung" during the restructuring in 1989 as legally independent companies Bayerische Granit AG and Schärdinger Granit Industrie AG.
