Description
Birra Peroni Srl is an Italian brewery belonging to the SABMiller Group. In 1846, the company Birra Peroni was founded by Francesco Peroni (* 1818) in Vigevano. In 1864 a second brewery was opened near Rome. The brewery became known nationwide in the 1950s and was able to establish itself on the Italian market. The brewery Birra Raffo was bought in 1961. In 1963, the nephew Francesco Peroni, Carlo Peroni, brewed a novel beer that was baptized Nastro Azzurro. The specialty of this beer was that one quarter of the grain in the original recipe was replaced with Italian corn. This corn comes from the northern Italian region around Nostrano, near Bergamo. Since 2003, Birra Peroni belongs to the SABMiller Group and is distributed worldwide. In 2016, SABMiller and the Japanese brewery group Asahi signed a contract stating that Asahi will take over the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brands. The sale was completed in October 2016 with the merger of AB-InBev and SABMiller.
