Beer description
Zwickel beer owes its name to the small tap for taking beer samples, which is located on every fermentation or storage tank. This tap is called a "Zwickel" in brewers' jargon.
Zwickel beer is one of the unbung beers. All the natural lees and suspended matter give the beer a very special flavour that is considered more valuable than filtered beer. The suspended matter consists of the remains of hops, malt, yeast and protein. Naturally cloudy beers can be experienced in all their aromatic beauty, which is characterised above all as spicy and full-bodied. Malty, caramelised nuances usually come to the fore. The beer can taste somewhat of fruit and grain. What makes the beer special is that the malt and hops in the beer are well balanced and there is hardly any bitterness to be tasted.
The exact flavour of a Kellerbier or Zwickel naturally also depends on the beer style. A Weizen-Zwickel with more wheat malt tastes different to a dark Zwickel with roasted barley malts, a light-coloured Kellerbier or a hopped Pils-Zwickel.
