Mark Newton's West Coast Routes series is back - the perfect antidote to the beloved but currently dominating NEIPA trend - and combines the style that brought many of us to craft beer in the first place with Mark's lush photographs of the region that spawned it Has. We have paired light barley malt with light Munich and light crystal to emphasize the malt character, to reinforce the kettle hop notes and at the same time to soften the bisque character, and with 7% ABV to hit the sweet spot of the complex body without getting into the ABV arms race . The finished beer is beautiful and golden, perfect for a sunny day on San Francisco Bay (or even a rainy day on Blackpool Beach). From the moment the wort reaches the boil, it is hopped with Centennial, Amarillo, and Simcoe - three West Coast classics found in almost every self-respecting classic IPA - as well as the more modern Strata , which provides plenty of passion fruit and sweetness that go hand in hand with the classic west coast character. The fermentation with a pure West Coast yeast gives the beer a crisp finish and lets the nostalgic, resinous and pithy grapefruit flavors shine through, which we expect from this style.
