His journey is one of fantastic ups and a slow, sad slide down. A poor young man from a working-class family, he thrived in the 1950s along with the rest of America, then experienced the frantic tension and chaos of the 1960s before sliding unstoppably downward into the feverish decade of the '70s.... Elvis gave everything a rhythm. He changed not only music, but language, fashion, and inspired a social revolution. The sixties began with him. There's a mystery in the charm of his voice that even the critics couldn't explain. "There are stronger voices," wrote the critic Dave Marsh, "but there is something in his voice that other singers search for all their lives. A warmth of heart, maybe..... Sometimes his song is pure, naked longing." We were obliged to pay homage to the King of Rock 'n' Roll. And that's why we didn't hesitate to include him in our Legends series. Elvis once combined the tenderness of the blues, the harmony of gospel, the sentimentality of country music with the frenzy of southern dance. We, in our turn, tried to bring together the fresh flavour of ripe cherries, bright acidity and light tartness of juicy lemon, to put it on a delicate base of saur-el, not forgetting the body of the beer, velvety, like the voice of the King!
