When in 1886 Josef Herz overtook the brewing restaurant "Zum Schwarzen Ochsen" nobody was expecting that this would be the first step of one of the most successfull private breweries of Germany.
In 1897 with 75.000 gallons of beer Josef Herz had taken already the third place in the region and in 1906 with 112.000 gallons of beer production per year placed his brewery on the second place. Having said that there were 20 more breweries in the same region.
They kept busy and by 1911 the beer production has already been 1.000.000 gallons of beer/year. With the economic crisis in the 1920ies the 2 biggest breweries of Memmingen merged into a joint-stock company.
By 1938 the beer outcome had reached 3.400.000 gallons of beer but what was built in hard work over long years had been destroyed by worldwar 2.
After the war in 1948 parts of the brewery had been renewed and the company started to recover quickly. By 1955 the production was already more than it was before the war.
In 1979 the brewhouse was renewed and the Memminger Brewery became the most modern brewery of Europe.
By the years some other breweries like "Traditionsbrauerei Weitnau im Allgäu" have been overtaken and brands like the Alpkönig have become to life. In 1998 the family Kesselschläger have bought the major stocks of the company and changed the name of the brand into "Memminger".
By 2003 the company has been changed from a joint-stock company into a Ltd. which was more fitting for a family company and gave it back their "private" brewery status.
The Memminger Gold Märzen Can is a golden beer with a beautiful foam. Smell is malty, spicy and grainy, soft, not very bitter and with a sweet note. It has a typical malt flavour of bottom-fermented beers. We are excited to hear your feedback!
